Mazatlan in the state of Sinaloa has the largest port facility between the Panama Canal and Los Angeles, and is located in the southern region of the state of Sinaloa, 131 miles southeast of state capital Culiacan. The climate is warm with an average year-round temperature of 77 degrees fahrenheit. For the purpose of this site, from north to south the Mazatlan breaks down into six zones. Nuevo Mazatlan in the north encompasses the stretch of Avenida Sabalo Cerritos from Bruja Beach in the north to Marina Mazatlan. The Golden Zone starts at El Cid Marina and extends along Avenida Camaron ending in the main hotel zone. The Malecon starts at Los Gaviotas Beach and ends in the downtown area. South of Mazatlan's Harbor is a peninsula known as Stone Island aka Isla de Las Peidras.
History For thousands of years, Native Americans migrated through the area following deer. The Aztecs gave Mazatlan it's name. In Nahuatl, Mazatlan means the "land of the deer". The Spanish arrived in the 1500's and by the early 1600's Mazatlan's port was well developed, due to the nearby silver and gold mines. Mazatlan became a city in 1806, and a major tourist destination in the 1950's. From 1960 through 1980, Mazatlan most likely introduced more Americans and Canadians to Mexico than any other Mexican City, as places like Cancun and Ixtapa were deserted sandbars.
Present With 700,000 residents, Mazatlan is Mexico's second largest coastal city, second only to Acapulco. Mazatlan is known as the "Pearl of the Pacific" because of its beautiful beaches and its abundant marine life. Guestimates put the current U.S./Canadian full or part time residents in Mazatlan at somewhere at between 6,000 and 12,000. With the addition of the David Fleming golf course at Marina Mazatlan, Mazatlan now has three golf courses. The other two being Estrella del Mar, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1996 and the El Cid golf course that was recently converted from 18 to 27 holes with the additional 9 holes being designed by Lee Trevino. The 1,458 acre Marina Mazatlan Area will add many new residences to the area, along with 3 new hotels and 1,200 boat slips.
Accommodations Mazatlan has approximately 9,400 lodging units, the majority at 3 to 4 star hotels, as many of the hotels were built in the 1940's and 1950's. New hotels are currently being added and the acommodations are improving rapidly, and expectations are 10,500 lodging units by 2009 and 12,000 by 2010.
